By Shane Cooper Some time ago, an unfortunate young man found himself at the Mall frantically looking for that special something for the lady in his life. Grabbing the first thing he saw, he immediately went to gift wrapping and purchased the most expensive wrapping style available. Christmas was the very next day and as she unwrapped the most beautifully wrapped gift shed ever seen, she gasped as she pulled out the Lady Massager. Not knowing exactly what it was, she quietly said, thanks. Okay, how often have you had to go shopping looking for that perfect thing or gift that will make her scream, Honey, you shouldnt have? That has to be the ultimate reaction to any gift giving endeavor, especially when you're getting for someone you love. So, while out shopping what should you avoid? Here are seven practical DONTs. You may not like what you read, but endure and remember, some of us have been around a while and have already learned these mistakes. Read on and prepare yourself for that next big reaction. There are several categories that you should avoid. You may think, hey, these are obvious. Well, they may seem obvious until your frantically wading through the mall crowd or at that big box store and feeling the urge to buy. Your I havent a clue what to get her side comes out and you think, shell love this. Stop, review the list of Donts and move on. One: DO NOT - buy her lingerie. This is cardinal rule number one on the do not list. Listen, it looks sexy on the mannequin and if youre lucky enough to have the ex-model sales person display it for you personally, go for it. However, do not purchase it as a gift. Heres the reason. Every woman buys lingerie for herself and technically, you buying lingerie for her is actually buying it for you. So, DO NOT buy her lingerie Two: DO NOT - buy her anything that involves electricity and a plug. This is the most often ignored rule of thumb. Vacuum cleaners, appliances and anything that involves being plugged in is a definite No-No. Even if shes the construction type and loves tools. Do not buy her a new drill or skill saw. Three: DO NOT - get her bath soaps or a luffa. Odds are, youll get something that smells funny thats only to your liking and most ladies prefer to select their own bath toiletries. There are a dozen kinds of luffas and again, the odds are against you that youll get one thats too scratchy. Four: DO NOT - get her a gift certificate of any kind. This again seems obvious, but basically says, you were at the check out stand at Target and couldnt think of anything else. You know how it went, the bright colored conveniently placed gift cards caught your eye. Five: DO NOT - buy her anything for a car. Regardless of what she needs, say an air freshener or a visor CD holder, theyre just not great gifts and are simply not appropriate. While you may think that flowery seat cover is nice and the color matches her interior, its simply another no-no. Six: DO NOT - send her anything over the internet. This one ranks up there with the gift certificate and makes the same statement. While surfing, you stumbled across an advertisement for some kind of cute ECard or EGift or anything E. Do not be tempted. Seven: DO NOT - buy her shoes. No woman wants shoes given to her of any kind. She does not want you to know her shoe size and or that youve even been looking at her feet. While she likes to buy shoes and expects you to notice and compliment her on them, she does not want you to buy anything you think is Cute. There you have it. Some practical tips for both new relationships, budding relationships and those that are a few years old. Once youve been together a long time, these suggestions may begin to blur as you get to know your lady. Regardless, keep in mind, truthfully, you need to know as much as possible about her. While these are areas to stay-away from, there are some exceptions to these rules. Especially if youve been together for a long time and you know for a fact that shed love a new Black-and-Decker drill, then, go for it. Until then, follow these simple safe areas and youll be more likely to hear. Oh Honey, you shouldnt have. Shane Cooper runs Cool Gifts and offers advice in the Gifters Blog on the site.
